Levulan Kerastick + Blu-U for Acne & Rosacea

Gentle on Skin, Tough on Bacteria

Topical and oral antibiotics are often used to treat acne. Unfortunately, P. acnes bacterium, the microorganism that causes acne, can develop
resistance to these treatments. The treatments also require daily dosing for weeks/months at a time, and can cause skin irritation and sensitivity.

In contrast, blue light photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been shown to effectively destroy these hardy bacteria by activating chemicals inside them, which ruptures their membranes.

Gentle and non-invasive, blue light PDT can significantly reduce inflammatory acne—with minimal side effects and no scarring. In fact, this treatment can help fade old acne scars and treat rosacea, age spots, and other skin conditions, too.

Know Before you Go

Before treatment, it’s important to let your doctor know if you’re taking any oral medications or using any prescription or nonprescription products on your face. There are also a few steps you’ll need to take after your treatment:

What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when the hair follicles under the skin get clogged with oils (sebum) and dead skin cells. Bacteria begins to grow inside the follicles, triggering inflammation and pimples on the surface of the skin.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is another common skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels on the face. It may also produce small, red, pus-filled bumps. Rosacea can occur in anyone, but it most commonly affects women over 45 with fair skin.

A Simple, Two-Step Solution

1. Apply

Your skin care specialist will apply LEVULAN KERASTICK solution to the affected skin areas. You will then relax in our office for 1-2 hours while the medicated cream absorbs into the skin. (Absorption times may vary.)

2. Illuminate

You’ll be invited into a treatment room to receive light therapy, which activates the medicated cream. You will sit or stand next to the BLU-U Illuminator for 16 minutes and 40 seconds. For your safety, you will be given protective eyewear. A fan may also be offered to help cool off during the session.

Blu-U is the only blue light PDT that’s FDA-approved
