Breast Augmentation Surgery to Increase Cup Size, Fix Proportion & Symmetry

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure performed on patients to increase breast size. It involves placing implants inside the breasts and then reconstructing the breast shape.

Is breast augmentation surgery right for me?

Breast augmentation surgery is right for you if your breasts are fully developed, and you are not happy with their appearance. It is particularly helpful for patients with breasts that do not match in size or have an elongated shape. You must be at least 18 years old, but some surgical plans require a minimum age up to 25.

What will happen at my breast augmentation consultation?

You’ll meet with a plastic surgeon during a one on one consultation. They will examine your existing breast tissue, discuss your desired aesthetic goals, and make sure breast augmentation is right for you. You will also review the types of breast implants available, and choose the best option for you and your body type. Your surgeon will be sure to outline the full pre and postoperative process so you know exactly what to expect before, during, and after surgery.

Which are the best breast implants for me?

Everyone’s body is different, so talk to your surgeon about the pros and cons of each implant option. Depending on your age, health, body type, and desired aesthetic goal, you and your surgical team will select the best breast implant for you.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water and provide a uniform shape, firmness, and feel.

Structured Saline Breast Implants

Structured saline implants are filled with sterile salt water, and contain an inner structure that makes the implant feel more natural.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel that feels like natural breast tissue.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants

Form stable implants are sometimes referred to as gummy bear breast implants because they maintain their shape even when the implant shell is broken. The consistency of the silicone gel inside is thicker than traditional silicone gel implants. These implants are also firmer than traditional implants, giving them a perkier, more solid appearance.

Round Breast Implants

Round breast implants have a tendency to make breasts appear fuller than form stable implants. Higher profile options can achieve even more projection. Because round implants are the same shape all over, there is less concern about them rotating out of place.

Smooth Breast Implants

Smooth breast implants feel the softest. They are able to move within the breast implant pocket, giving them a more natural appearance when patients walk or perform physical activity.

Textured Breast Implants

Textured breast implants develop scar tissue to stick to the implant, making them less likely to move around inside of the breast and become repositioned. Texturing offers some advantage in diminishing the risk of a tight scar capsule.

What will happen the day I have breast augmentation surgery? How long does it take?

When you check in to the surgery center, you will fill out a few forms before entering the surgery preparation room. Once changed into your surgery gown, a nurse will insert an IV and begin a saline drip to prepare your body for anesthesia. When it’s time for surgery, you will be taken into the operating room and then given medication through your IV so that you are unconscious during surgery. It will feel like you’ve only been asleep for a few minutes, but the full surgery will take anywhere from 3-6 hours depending on your surgical plan. You will wake up from surgery in a comfortable recovery room surrounded by our attentive postoperative team. It will take about an hour to fully recover from anesthesia before you are ready to sit up and walk around.

What is recovery like after breast augmentation surgery?

Your surgical team will provide detailed after care instructions following your breast augmentation surgery. It is very important to follow these instructions. Failing to do so can result in serious postoperative complications. Do not apply excessive force, abrasion, or motion to your chest area while you are healing. For at least three weeks following breast augmentation surgery, you will experience swelling and mild to moderate pain which can be managed by prescription pain medication. It will take at least six weeks for your body to fully recover from surgery, and you must avoid strenuous physical activity during this time.

You will need to wear a special support bra during the healing the process to compress your breasts and protect your incisions. This will also help minimize swelling.
