Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal at Skin And Cancer Institute

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal focuses highly concentrated light energy into individual hair follicles, killing them unit by unit so that hair can no longer grow within the dead follicle. It’s a quick and easy alternative to constant waxing, shaving, and plucking.

Which parts of the body can laser hair removal treat?

Laser hair removal can be used anywhere on the body except near the eyes. The most popular treatment areas include the chest and back for men and bikini line and armpits for women.

Is laser hair removal right for me?

Laser hair removal is the perfect hair removal alternative for men and women of all ages. The darker the hair, the better the results.

What can I expect the day I receive laser hair removal therapy?

For 12 hours prior to your appointment, do not apply deodorant, lotions, or oils to the area being treated. Once inside the treatment room, you’ll be given a pair of protective eye shields. The laser applicator will then begin delivering blasts of light, which will feel like a rubber band snapping against your skin. After treatment, you will be instructed to apply a gel or ointment to cool and moisturize your skin. You will also need to cover the treated area with clothing or wear sunscreen for at least 24 hours after treatment.

What will recovery be like after I receive laser hair removal?

You may experience very mild redness and a tingling sensation similar to a mild sunburn for a few hours after your laser hair removal session. There is absolutely no down time and you can resume regular activities immediately following treatment. Do not take a hot shower or submerge the treated area in hot water for 24 hours after laser hair removal. Doing so will not affect the results of treatment, but it will irritate your skin.

Do I need to follow a special skin care routine after laser hair removal?

Be sure to use sunscreen to protect your skin from sun exposure for at least a week following treatment. You can also cover the treated area with clothing for protection. You may notice that the treated area is more sensitive to deodorants and lotions for a few days following treatment, so you may want to have products formulated for sensitive skin on hand.

When will I see results after laser hair removal?

Each patient responds differently to laser hair removal. Depending on the darkness of your hair and the area being treated, you may notice less hair growth as soon as a week after your first treatment. Even though your results may appear quickly, you will still need more treatments for complete results. Some people are completely hair free after just six laser hair removal sessions, and others need several more treatments for optimal results. After a few sessions, you will have a better idea of how quickly your body responds to laser hair removal. Once you have achieved optimal results, you may decide to return once or twice a year for touch ups.
