Skin Cancer Prevention

Whether you’re coming to Las Vegas to stay or for a temporary vacation, the sunny city is a paradise and an ultimate destination for enjoying luxury. There is danger lurking behind the sun of Las Vegas. The desert climate causes a high UV radiation level in Las Vegas city. It poses a strong threat of melanoma (skin cancer) in people.

Here are some recommendations we give our patients to help protect their skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays” or something like At skin and cancer institute we believe in educating our patients so they can navigate the world of dermatology!

Melanoma aka. Skin Cancer

Melanocytes cells produce melanin pigments that color our skins. When exposed to the UV rays, the innate properties of this cell changes.

The most common change is tanning and we all are familiar with it. However, the scariest situation occurs if the cell DNA is altered due to the UV exposure. The condition leads to skin cancer or melanoma.

Melanoma cancer is just one of many types of skin cancers, for example, squamous and carcinoma. Melanoma is rare, but the growth and spreading rate of this cancer are concerning.

In Las Vegas, the melanoma cancer case is increasing day by day. According to a report, half the cancer patients in the USA are suffering from skin cancer.

We recommend people not to ignore  melanoma. Rather, it’s high time you learn about this disease and take preventive actions.

What Causes Skin Cancer in Las Vegas? The Risk Factors

The strong Las Vegas Sun can damage and alter your skin causing melanoma and other issues… Let’s take a look!

  1. Sun Exposure: Las Vegas stays sunny more or less than 320 days a year. This means that the citizens here soak in more UV radiation than average people. Intense UV radiation absorption causes tanning and leads to melanoma.
  2. Skin Type: The American Cancer Society warns that people with lighter skin tone or burning skin are at more risk of melanoma. Apparently, fair skin with red or blond hair and blue or green eyes are more vulnerable to this skin cancer.
  3. Age: Research says that elders and senior citizens are more likely to get diagnosed with melanoma.
  4. Gender: Apparently, incidents of skin cancer are higher in males than females.
  5. Family History: A report suggests that 1 out of 10 people with skin cancer has a family history of this disease. It means if your first-degree relative has melanoma, you are more likely to get diagnosed, too.
  6. Low Immunity: We have seen cases where patients have low immunity because they are on medications for a long period. Suppressed immunity can cause melanoma. Again, people with a past history of melanoma can fall victim to this disease again.
  7. Miscellaneous: Working in chemical industries or nuclear stations might also cause skin cancer.

How to Protect Yourself from Skin Cancer in Las Vegas

Melanoma can be hereditary. It depends on skin tone as well. We cannot change our genes or skin quality At Skin Care Institute, we have some safety tips for our patients. These will help countering scorching heat of the sun.

1. Sunscreen Cream Is Mandatory

If you are in Las Vegas, do not go outside without applying sunscreen on your skin.

The cream creates a barrier between your skin and the UV rays. As a result, the negative effect of the UV is reduced.

However, do not fall into the trap of the cheap sunscreen creams. They do not protect the skin but instead trigger cancer cells. We suggest you look for sunscreens that have particular ingredients that help you counter the harmful rays of the sun.

2. Wear Appropriate Clothing to Protect Yourselves from Harmful Rays of the Sun

Yeah, sunny weather and summer clothes bring a different vibe. But in Las Vegas, we should not only focus on the styling but also on the lurking danger.

We’d suggest you wear full-sleeved shirts and skirts.

We are not suggesting you pack up with clothes. But try to cover as much area as possible with clothes to avoid UV exposure. This can trigger allergies and rashes. If you do not want to negotiate with style, then make sunscreen your permanent companion for the time being.

And yes, do not forget the summer accessories that can also offer protection. Take an umbrella with you when going out. Look for some nice hats to buy.

3. Look for Shades

In Las Vegas, we do not lack shades. So, if you do not plan to sunbathe, please stay inside the building and enjoy the scenario on the hottest days. And if you absolutely have to be outdoors, just take breaks from time to time and find a shady place to relax.

4. Regular Checkups Can Be Life-Saving!

Usually, unusual mole growth is the primary sign of skin cancer. We follow the ABCDE rule for visual diagnosis of melanoma. It goes as follows,

  • Asymmetry: Half the mole does not match the other half.
  • Border Irregularity: The mole edges have no clear boundary.
  • Color: The mole color varies from place to place. We can notice moles in shades of black or brown with pink, red, blue, or white patches.
  • Diameter: The spot diameter is mostly wider than 0.25 inches.
  • Evolving: The mole keeps changing in shape, size, and color.

If you notice any such irregularity, seek professional advice from your dermatologist. He will do a biopsy test to confirm the condition. With a regular checkup, you will get diagnosed early and start proper treatment before the cancer reaches a deadly stage.

Modern medical science offers several curing options for skin cancer. The most common ones are,

  • Surgery: Removing cancerous cells is an effective way to put a stop to this disease.
  • Radiation Therapy: High-energy radiation is used to kill the affected melanocytic cells in the body.
  • Chemotherapy: In topical and systemic chemotherapies, drugs and injectables are used to cure the patients.
  • Immunotherapy: Here, the patient grows immunity to destroy the cancer cells and prevent their spread.
